Nova recruit to watch: SG Donte DiVincenzo (2015)

Donte Divincenzo

High School - Salesianum ( Wilmington, Delaware)

AAU - Team Final

Highlights -

Last Sunday, I attended my brothers summer league game at a local high school in Delaware.  My brother had mentioned Donte’s name to me a couple of times and I had an idea of what he was about.  I knew that he was garnering some collegiate interest and figured he would be worth the time to check out.  Donte had a modest performance, something to the tune of 8 points, 2 or 3 blocks and a few assists all in a few minutes work.  Even with the modest summer league numbers, I could see the flashes of brilliance.  Donte dominated when he wanted to; utilizing his ability to slash into the lane at will, his smooth jumper, superb court vision as well as a high motor even in a meaningless summer league game.

Donte is he is not just performing well in HS but also for his AAU team Team Final Black, continuing his high level of performance will help him gain a lot more offers in the near future.

Donte is very athletic and could fit in very well at the 2 for Villanova.  By the time Donte would be at ‘Nova, Hilliard will be gone and at the moment Hart is the only other 2 on the roster. Villanova has open spots and one could very well be for Donte.  Donte has the potential to become a great all around 2.  Donte brings defensive prowess as he plays hardnosed D and has a knack for getting steals. He also has a smooth jumper and can create a shot off the dribble.

Donte’s court vision is what really impressed me during the game. I saw four or five passes where I had to say “wow”. His vision, ball handling skills and control of the offense have convinced me that he can play the 1 as well as the 2.

Donte has things he needs to improve as well; I would like to see him get a little bit stronger, he can finish at the rim adequately enough but with a little extra strength he will be a real problem. I know Divincenzo can catch and shoot but I want to see a bit more of him in that kind of situation.

Don’t let his modest three star rivals rating fool you; this is a kid who will be a high major prospect. He is still growing and should fill out his frame a bit more and also will develop more as a player.  The recruiting trail has been heating up for Divincenzo as Boston College, St. Joes and URI have all offered him within the last week or so.  He is also gaining interest from the likes of Georgetown and Notre Dame.

Divincenzo could play alongside of Ja’Quan Newton, so if Newton commits to Nova that should not hinder Donte in playing time. There is the possibility that Donte would be less likely to commit if SG Phil Booth were to commit to Villanova. However, Booth and Divincenzo are versatile combo guards who could make the transition to PG if needed.

Regardless, it is go time for Villanova. Divincenzo can be a difference maker for the wildcats, it is time for Jay Wright and company to make their moves on the young athletic guard and bring him into the fold.

P.S. - As I was sitting on sideline wearing a Villanova Basketball hat and I caught Donte looking over at me a few times. I'm obviously not an official Nova scout but the interest in Nova could be there for Donte.
