Mike Rice fired by Rutgers, Danny Hurley a candidate for job?

Rutgers head basketball coach Mike Rice has been fired for abusive behavior towards players caught on video by a former staff member. Video footage shows Rice physically abusing players by throwing basketballs and pushing them, and verbally abusing them with anti-gay slurs.

Rice was suspended 3 games and fined $50,000 earlier this season by Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti for the same incident, but after the video footage aired on ESPN public outrage forced their decision to fire Rice and admit mistakes in their previous handling of the situation. Speculation has begun on possible replacements for Rice, such as Rhode Island head coach Danny Hurley. Hurley's college coaching career includes stints as a Rutgers assistant from 1997-2001, and head coach at Wagner for two seasons prior to taking the job at URI last year. Hurley is a New Jersey native who played college basketball for Seton Hall, the brother of former Duke star and newly hired Buffalo head coach Bobby Hurley, and son of hall of fame New Jersey high school basketball coach of St. Anthony's Bob Hurley.
