Richard Pitino to be Gophers next head coach

Richard Pitino is finalizing a deal to leave Florida International and become the next head basketball coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Following the firing of Tubby Smith, Minnesota turns over the reigns to the 30 year old son of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino. Richard Pitino lead the FIU Golden Panthers to an 18-14 overall record last season in the Sun Belt conference. Other top candidates who have reportedly passed on the opportunity in Minnesota include VCU's Shaka Smart, Butler's Brad Stevens, Iowa State's "Mayor" Fred Hoiberg, and former NBA and Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders.
