Mitchell Wilbekin chooses the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

Mitchell Wilbekin is the first verbal commit for the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes for the 2014 class.

Monday evening at 7 PM ET, the 6’0, 170 lb senior point guard from Rock School out of Gainesville Florida, announced his decision. He chose to head to the Midwest and play for Tulsa in Conference USA. Wilbekin, ranked the No. 28 player in the Source Hoops Class of 2014 Top 50 in Florida, took an official visit to Tulsa September 6-8.  The following Wednesday, Manning showed how big a priority Wilbekin was for his program by traveling to Gainesville to watch Wilbekin at an open gym and then made an in-home visit with the Wilbekin family.

A solid floor general, Wilbekin sees the court well and sets up teammates for easy shots.  Like all college freshman, adjusting to the speed of the game and getting stronger are two things Wilbekin knows he will have to work on for success at the next level. The Rock School’s schedule combined with being able to practice against high major talent during the past several years should help him transition well to C-USA play. Mitchell Wilbekin chose Tulsa over offers from Vanderbilt, USF and UCF; he also had interest from Florida, Miami, Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Virginia.  He is Tulsa’s first verbal commit in the 2014 class.
