Ballard High’s own Kelan Martin commits to Butler

Kelan Martin shown above, is a big commit for a Butler program that is in a rebuilding stage due to losing their storied Head Coach Brad Stevens to the Boston Celtics.

Ballard senior power forward Kelan Martin committed to Butler on Monday. Martin had recently named a top three of Butler, Saint Louis and Texas Tech. The 6’6, 210 lb Kentucky prospect took his official visit to Butler over the weekend. Ballard Coach Chris Renner confirmed to the Herald Leader that Martin has committed to the Bulldogs. ESPN ranks Martin as the No. 97 overall prospect in the Class of 2014. He helped lead Ballard to the Sweet Sixteen title game last March, and the Bruins will likely be the pre-season favorite to win the state championship in 2014. Martin is one of two Kentucky high schoolers in ESPN’s Top 100 for 2014. The other is Ballard point guard Quentin Snider, who committed to Illinois last month.

Martin, a versatile forward, averaged 19.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest last year as a junior at Ballard while teaming up with recently mentioned Quentin Snider to lead Ballard to a runner-up finish in the Kentucky state tournament. Martin is the second commitment in the class for the Bulldogs. He joins fellow three-star prospect Tyler Wideman in the Bulldogs haul. He also held offers from Ohio, IUPUI, UMKC, Indiana State, Western Kentucky, and Xavier.
