Danny Hurley Turns Down Rutgers Head Coach Job

Rhode Island head coach Danny Hurley, a New Jersey native with deep basketball roots in the Garden State, has reportedly declined an offer from Rutgers to be their next head coach.

Hurley was hesitant to accept the Rutgers offer of $1 million per season for five years due to the challenge of rebuilding that lies ahead in the wake of the Mike Rice player abuse scandal, and the fact that Rutgers still has not hired a new athletic director as they prepare to head into the Big Ten conference for the first time in 2014. Hurley is also not looking to leave Rhode Island just one season removed from taking the URI job and leaving his previous head coaching job at Wagner. Brother Bobby Hurley is entering his first year as head coach of Buffalo, and hall of fame high school coach father Bob Hurley has ruled out any chance of taking the job.
