Former Xavier Commit cuts List to Five

Melvin Swift Jr. shown above, has cut his list down to five schools.

6’7, 205 lb power forward Melvin Swift Jr. out of Houston, Texas, has cut his list down to five schools in no order: St. John’s, SMU, Baylor, University of Massachusetts, and the University of Connecticut. He also held offers from Baylor, LSU, Penn State, St. Joseph’s, Texas A&M, and Xavier to name a few. Swift had previously been committed to Xavier in early 2012, where he ended up not signing a letter of intent, and opening up his recruitment again. Sources indicate he had changed his mind due to family considerations, and staying closer to home in Texas. The athletic junior is considered the 14th-best power forward by and the 44th-best player in the 2014 class by Swift currently attends Jack Yates High School in Texas where he continues to develop his skills for the collegiate level.

Swift is a very athletic power forward who runs the floor like a deer and plays above the rim on all clear path and angles. Swift has good strength that allows him to finish through contact with touch and body control. He excels in transition and also scores with short, quick slashes. Swift plays with great energy, urgency and competes. Swift also seems to be an excellent physical condition because he can run and jump all day long. Swift is one of the most exciting power forwards in the class on the break, on the glass, blocking shots and finishing in and around the rim. He productivity will increase as his ball skills improve. It came as a surprise to many when Swift decommitted from Xavier, but hopefully he chooses a school this time around and sticks with it. Whichever program is lucky enough to land this high flyer, will surely be excited for the athleticism he brings to the table, at both ends of the floor.
