LSU lands Baton Rouge native Skylar Mays

LSU lands another recruit Skylar Mays as shown above, for the upcoming future in 2016.

LSU added another piece Saturday when University High sophomore point guard Skylar Mays announced that he had committed to the Tigers. The 6’1, 180 lb sophomore in the Class of 2016 announced his decision via Twitter during halftime of LSU’s 87-80 victory Saturday over Auburn. “I didn’t notify them directly,” Mays said of informing the LSU staff of his pledge. “It’s probably something I’ll do (Sunday).”The decision is still somewhat early, given that Mays said in June he wasn’t looking to rush into an early commitment. Yet LSU had plenty of factors in its favor. The most notable is that LSU coach Johnny Jones’ son (John Jr.) was a teammate on the Cubs and the AAU circuit. The guard also has said that staying close to home might be a priority so his family can watch his collegiate career. “It’s definitely a big part of (the decision),” Mays said. “My parents definitely want to watch me come and play. It definitely helps when you’re at a place that close by and you know.”

Mays is considered by some in Louisiana to be the top point guard in the state, among underclassmen. The Baton Rouge native, Mays attended University High School in Louisiana. Coach Jones has the LSU program going extremely strong on the recruiting trail right now, and capitalizing on a local talent like Mays is yet another important addition for the Tigers. The Tigers previously held a pledge from top 5 junior prospect Ben Simmons, who could be the beneficiary of Mays’ passes in the future.
